What is a QR code device?
QR code devices are special purpose 'virtual' devices without any associated player hardware. The purpose of a QR device is to provide an easy way to distribute content to mobile devices via QR code. Instead of using dedicated display hardware player to show content, a QR code is generated by the CMS allowing end-users to scan and view the same content on their mobile device.
A typical scenario for a QR code device would be a restaurant menu where the menu is designed to be viewed on a mobile devices. The menu would be created (or uploaded) to the Revel Digital CMS and scheduled in the same manner as a menu board. Instead of displaying the content on a screen, users would scan the associated QR code and view the same content on their mobile. It's important to keep in mind that the very same features available to traditional digital signage are also available to QR devices including content creation, scheduling, and analytics.

Creating a new QR code device
Creating a QR device is simple, simply select QR Device when registering a new device and supply any details.
Once the device has been created, you will see the associated QR code along with it's custom Short Code URL. The QR code is the encoded version of the short code, so both will redirect to the same content.
Click on the QR code to view the raw SVG image which can be distributed in any manner you wish (email, print, etc). Likewise, the short code URL may be distributed and utilized as necessary.
Utilizing QR code devices
Once a QR device has been registered, it can be managed like any other device in your account. Simply schedule content to the device and it will be immediately available to end-users. Scanning the QR code will redirect to the custom viewer app responsible for displaying the content on mobile devices. The app honors the scheduling rules defined in the CMS including those defined in individual playlist source items.
Custom Tags
QR devices support specific tags to affect how the content is displayed by the QR app.
The following tags can be applied to any media item.
qr:link=XXXXX
Media items with this tag will display a button redirecting the user to the defined URL.
qr:link_title=XXXXX
Displays the assigned text to the link button. By default the link button will display an icon.
qr:image_only=true
Cards in the mobile app will consist of only the image, no associated text.
Analytics
Each QR code is capable of event tracking which provides valuable insight into end-user behavior including content impressions and session tracking. These metrics are available in the AdHawk section of the CMS and is automatically enabled for devices on any Plus service level.
