If you are getting a message on your Revel Player about Crosswalk, please consult the following guide to identify, address, and prevent the issue from recurring.

Background

Where: This issue is exclusive to Android-based Revel Players. Crosswalk is a deprecated Android browser that offered improved performance in certain scenarios. Most legacy Android Revel Player versions supported a setting to optionally enable the Crosswalk browser up until it was dropped in 2023, starting with version 2.2.267.

What: If the issue occurs on a device, a prompt will be shown on screen just after launching the Revel Player, obscuring a portion of the screen. The prompt reads as follows:

Crosswalk Project Service Not Found

RevelDigital Player requires the Crosswalk Project Service to work. Please install it from the app store, then restart RevelDigital Player

Two options are given: CLOSE and GET CROSSWALK

In certain cases, this may manifest on the CMS as a device with status 'Active'. Note that an 'Active' status may have other causes and is not exclusive to the Crosswalk issue.

When: 'Enable Crosswalk Browser' is a Device Setting and can be optionally enabled on a player-by-player basis. 'Enable Crosswalk Browser' is listed alongside many other common settings found in the Revel Player In-App-Menu. If 'Enable Crosswalk Browser' is checked without first installing the required Crosswalk Project software, the prompt will show after Revel Starts identifies the missing Crosswalk software.

The Crosswalk browser setting is listed in the Revel Player In-App-Menu. Shown here as checked (Enabled)

Why: The most common cause arises after a user navigates the In-App-Menu to make changes or to get device info, and accidentally checks 'Enable Crosswalk Browser' unknowingly. As a note of caution, please take care when adjusting device settings, and after making changes, it's a good idea to confirm that those changes haven't impacted the player's ability to display content.

How to fix: Listed below are several approaches that can be taken to resolve the issue. Follow along to find the approach most suitable for your deployment. If you are still in need of assistance after consulting the guide, please reach out to Revel support

Overview

Depending on how the Crosswalk setting was enabled, follow the appropriate section below:

Crosswalk Enabled Intentionally

If Crosswalk was enabled intentionally, simply install the plugin and relaunch the player

Install the Crosswalk software

  • Solution: Install the Crosswalk software dismiss the prompt
  • Install Crosswalk APK: Download the Crosswalk APK installer file
  • Installation Notes:
    • Installation can be accomplished much like sideloading the Revel Player app
    • Sideloading typically requires physical access to the device. If the device has remote access software (e.g., TeamViewer), the APK may be installed remotely

Crosswalk Enabled Unintentionally

If Crosswalk was enabled unintentionally, use one of the following options to disable it

Option 1: Update the Revel Player software

  • Solution: The Crosswalk setting has been removed in player versions 2.2.267 and later. Updating to this version or higher will automatically disable the setting and prevent it from being re-enabled in the future.
  • Latest versions available: Android Revel Player Release
  • Installation Instructions: How to sideload the Android player app
  • Installation Note: Updating typically requires physical access to the device. If the device has remote access software (e.g., TeamViewer), the APK may be installed remotely

If the player software can’t be updated, the setting can be disabled either remotely using CMS tools or manually using the Player In-App-Menu

Option 2: Disable Crosswalk setting via remote device settings update

  • Requirements: Player must be online & running 2.1.248 or later
  • Solution: Disable Crosswalk remotely
  • Notes:
    • If the player is older than 2.1.248, it won’t support remote settings updates. However, if the device is online and has remote access software (e.g., TeamViewer), the setting can be disabled manually in the in-app-menu.
      • Remote into the device.
      • Choose CLOSE if the Crosswalk prompt is still on screen
      • With Revel running, use Shift + F12 to open the In-App Menu
      • Uncheck “Enable Crosswalk Browser” to disable it

If the device can’t be updated remotely, it’s likely offline, and disabling this setting will require direct physical access to the device

Option 3: Disable Crosswalk manually via touch or mouse/keyboard

  • Mouse/Keyboard instructions:
    • Choose CLOSE if the Crosswalk prompt is still on screen
    • With Revel running, use Shift + F12 to open the In-App Menu
    • Choose CLOSE, if the Crosswalk prompt is still on screen
    • Uncheck “Enable Crosswalk Browser” to disable it
  • Touchscreen instructions
    • Choose CLOSE if the Crosswalk prompt is still on screen
    • Use five fingers to touch and hold the screen for 5–10 seconds
    • The In-App Menu should appear
    • Uncheck “Enable Crosswalk Browser” to disable it
