Minimum Android OS Revel Player compatibility

Periodically, new versions of the Revel Player software are released that may include feature updates, enhanced security, or optimized performance. Throughout the release lifecycle, it's necessary at times to raise the minimum supported OS version in order to implement new features or to adhere to certain standard requirements.

Minimum OS Implications

When such a change occurs, future releases of the Revel Player, from that point forward can no longer be installed on versions of Android below a certain level (Minimum supported SDK/API level). On Android, these levels closely correspond to a respective Android OS version.

These types of changes can hold potential significance, primarily if your target devices are running older version of Android OS that is less than or nearing the minimum supported OS level of the Revel Player.

Identifying OS Conflicts

When an attempt is made to install the Revel Player on and unsupported Android OS, the system automatically prevent the app from installing. When sideloading the APK, from within the Android OS, you may be presented with a 'Parse error' message: ' There is a problem parsing the package'.

This generic message can be triggered by a few different causes, one of which is an OS compatibility error. If sideloading the app via adb, a more specific error message is shown:

Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK]

Ideally it should be possible to avoid receiving these types of errors by referencing our compatibility table below. While it's always a good idea to verify that the required version of Revel Player is compatible with your target Android platform, this table can help expedite the search for a specific release.

Version & OS  solutions

There are a few available options to consider if you find that your Android hardware can't run the latest version of the Revel Player software.

Install latest compatible player version

  • The Revel Player can still be installed on Android devices below the minimum supported level; it just won't be able to run the latest release. Although the latest Revel Player may not be compatible with you system, there exists a 'latest compatible version' of the player prior to removing support for the target OS. Please reference the table below to identify which version is your best option.

Each row details the latest version of Revel Player that can still be installed on the associated Android OS & SDK/API level, before support was removed. (Direct download links are to prod-release builds only - see versions site for alternate build options)

Update the OS

  • If this option is available it can help extend the your device EOL by allowing you to install the latest updates for longer. Contacting the hardware manufacturer can be helpful in determining if a firmware update is available for your model and how to perform the update.

Hardware Replacement

  • If neither option listed above is suitable, then consider replacing the hardware with something more modern that can continue running the latest software for years to come.
