Basic Setup & Layout
To get started, create a comma separated list including the symbol of each financial instrument you wish to monitor. Then use that list to fill in the Stock Symbols field of the gadget.
When the stock symbol(s) have been added, the gadget should automatically refresh and display the relevant financial data. If no data loads, ensure that the list format and symbol choice/spelling are correct. If everything appears correct, please contact us with the relevant info, both asset and exchange names and symbols. It's possible that the stock symbol may be missing, in which case it will have to be added to the provider database.
Once data is flowing, it will continue to automatically update in three minute intervals. By default, the gadget will list the following information:
- Financial instrument name
- Instrument symbol (and exchange if provided)
- Current price
- Price change percentage for the current day
Toggle on the Show Intraday Chart option to display additional data, including:
- Price change amount for the current day
- Price change history chart for the current day
Advanced Functionality & Configuration
If you already know the stock or asset symbols you plan to use, they may work fine as is. However, it's a good idea to verify that the symbol used is accurate via our financial data provider, Twelve Data. Their Symbol Search tool can be used to quickly look up and confirm whether or not the symbol spelling and formatting are accurate.
A symbol can be provided by itself, or along with a specific exchange (colon separated); see format below:
INSTURMENT_SYMBOL
INSTURMENT_SYMBOL:EXCHANGE_SYMBOL
The first approach will retrieve the first financial instrument that matches the provided symbol. However, this may lead to unexpected results in cases where the same symbol is used to represent different types of instruments/assets or is listed on multiple exchanges/markets. In these cases, the second approach becomes useful. To help ensure that the correct financial instrument is retrieved and to reduce uncertainty, the exchange symbol can be used to identify a specific market or other foreign exchange option.
Take Bitcoin to US Dollars (BTC/USD) for instance. Searching for the symbol on twelve data shows that it can be found listed on four exchanges: Coinbase Pro, Binance, Bitfinex, and FTX. Providing just the BTC/USD symbol will retrieve financial data from just one of the above markets; in this case, Coinbase Pro. If another market should instead be used, such as Binance, just include the correct exchange or market symbol in the format given above. See example below:
BTC/USD:Binance
The gadget is case-insensitive, so case choice shouldn't impact its ability to retrieve data. However, the gadget will display the symbol on screen exactly as it appears in the list. So it's important to compose your symbol list with the end result in mind.
For monitoring other types of asset classes, please reference the twelve data market search tool and use the provided asset class filters to refine your search.
The gadget can support as many instruments as needed, provided the screen size is sufficient.
