Slack is a workspace communications tool primarily used for sending messages and files. The Slack integration for Revel Digital provides a means for displaying those messages and associated media items on your digital signage displays. Using the Slack gadget, messages can easily be included in your templates or playlists. Slack messages are also delivered to players as a command which can be utilized for triggering content or for more sophisticated applications involving custom actions via scripting.
Getting Started
Link your Slack account
You will need your Slack login in order to link your Slack account with Revel Digital via our integrations. Navigate to Account Information > Integrations and click the Connect button for the Slack integration.
This will present a popup asking for your Slack credentials. Note, we do not ever store your credentials but rather a unique token utilized strictly for accessing specifically authorized Slack services.
Add the Revel Digital bot to a Slack channel
Revel Digital has created a Slack bot as the medium for communications with our platform.
Only Slack channels with the Revel Digital bot added as a member will be able to communicate with Revel Digital. This is easily done by inviting the bot to any channel you wish using the /invite @Revel Digital command.
Also note that your channel must not be set as private.
Slack Gadget
Using our Slack gadget is the easiest method of adding Slack communications to your digital signage. The gadget has a number of options for styling, supports landscape/portrait orientations, and is also capable of displaying images and video posted to your Slack channel.
The gadget is available from the library, simply add a Gadget zone to your template or playlist and clicking the Select Gadget button will open the library.
Enter your Slack channel name or ID in the gadget options (required). Other options are available for customization including text style and message duration.
Sharing Media
Images and video can be included in your messages and will display adjacent to any included text. Slack does not automatically allow media to be publicly visible, so it's important to configure external access to any media you want displayed by the gadget.
To do this, hover over the media item in your Slack message and click the menu icon. Click the 'Create external link..' to enable external access to the item.
